Treatment for Sciatica in Bath
Trapped nerves can happen for a number of reasons, including from a disc prolapse ('slipped disc'), tight muscles and facet joint locks. Trapped nerves can be extremely painful, limit movement in certain directions, or just produce tingling or pins & needles. Sometimes what feels like nerve pain can actually be 'referred' pain originating from a joint or muscle and being 'misread' by the brain. All of these symptoms can be relieved with manual therapy.
During your initial appointment, we'll ask you a range of questions and conduct a thorough physical assessment of the problem area. We'll explain the cause of your pain, and a treatment plan will be tailor-made for your diagnosis.
Sciatica and trapped nerves in the neck can be linked to poor posture, a lack of core strength, loss of flexibility and lifestyle factors including being sedentary or spending a lot of time at a desk. We will assess your posture, strength and flexibility, and provide you with a home exercise plan to strengthen you back up. You'll also be given targeted stretches, tips on maintaining a better posture, and suggestions for lifestyle modifications, if needed.
Rarely, Sciatica and disc prolpase can present with Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), a serious conditon requiring immediate medical attention. You will be carefully screened for this during your assessment, and onward referral to specialists will be made if necessary.
